With an antiquated and hard-to-maintain Ektron website, Pasadena Water and Power had long outgrown their website infrastructure. They could not add information in a way that users could understand, and the look and feel was outdated and did not reflect Pasadena’s progressive commitment to residents and energy conservation. With an organization-wide move to WordPress, PWP partnered with The Glue to re-imagine their website from the ground up.
We first undertook an industry-wide market and comparative landscape review to pinpoint trends and best-of-class experiences. We also delivered an audit of the existing site, using heuristics and best practices to highlight key areas of challenges and opportunities. Finally our discovery process included a strategic roadmap, documenting best practices, feature recommendations and future state ideas.
We recommended a completely new experience concept, and look and feel for the redesigned site, as well as a content strategy that emphasized brevity, clarity and layman’s language. After engaging in a moodboard exercise and presenting user experience concepts, we designed and delivered a suite of responsive wireframe templates, user interface design compositions, a style guide, icon set and image treatment guide. Finally, we re-wrote twenty of the top accessed pages to be clearer and more engaging.
We then architected a robust WordPress CMS to handle the varied types of content, forms and Google Map integrations required by the new design. We researched and integrated the best plugins to handle forms, social sharing and content migration among others, working closely with the City of Pasadena IT department to ensure our selected plugins worked seamlessly with their parent install. We modified the WordPress administrator interface to make it easy-to-use, so that those tasked with maintaining the site could do so seamlessly and without stress.
With a looming Ektron expiration, PWP had an aggressive and immovable timeline to get the new site up and running. The Glue hit all its deadlines ahead of schedule, with a beautiful intuitive responsive website that launched two weeks early in September 2017.
